                   MASTITIS- KETOSIS-MILK FEVER
Hypocalocemia,(calcium deficiency, called Milk Fever)
Pregnancy Toxemia,( pregnancy disease, twin lamb disease, Ketosis)
Mastitis, (Bluebag)
MILK FEVER- ( blood calcium lost in calfing)
1) CALCIUM - need to replenish blood calcium
that is lost in calving
2)  ENERGY - animal looses energy and is
week. They need an ENERGY BOOST
3) APPETITE - animal doesn't want to eat, They
need
B VITAMINS to stimulate the appitite.
You can buy calcium gel. and many other
products to maintain proper blood levels of
calcium for before and after calving.    Molasses
added to water 30 days prior to  calving?lambing
can prevent milk fever.
                 Cows-Sheep-Goats
KETOSIS
- (Niacin is needed to counteract Ketosis,
which is also found in the B Vitimins and stimulates
appetite)
at risk are all first calf heifers, after freshening
Use on cows at first sign of Ketosis and on
Overweight cows  before freshening to help
counteract ketosis. Sheep at risk are older ewes
carrying multiple lambs and in extreamly thin or over
weight ewes. Irregular feeding due to inclement
weather may contribute to an out break of pregnancy
toxemia.
Occurs within the last few weeks of pregnancy.
Symptoms-Loss of appetite,twitching ears, spastic
motions, inability to stand. Labored breathing , coma
and death can occur.
There are many oral suppliments you can purchase
from farm stores and catalogs. (to be administered at
first sign of trouble)  and also Ketosis Urine strips
you can test for ketosis in sheep and cows.
Since ketosis occurs within the last few weeks of
pregnancy,
I always start adding Molasses 30 days
prior to lambing. (1/3 Cup to 5 gal. bucket water)
You should always keep something like this on hand
for when spring time babies are arriving.
Whether it is the Nutri-Drench ketosis preventitives
purchased form your farm store, or the
MOLASSES
warm water mix.
Don't wait for a problem to arise, the
preventatives are much easier than the cure.
MASTITS-Inflamation occurs when bacteria, viruses
invade the Udder or Mammary glands. If not diagnosed
early and treated aggressively can result in permanent
damage to udder, decreased milk production and in
severe cases, even death.
SYMPTOMS- The affected gland may look discolored
and dark, swollen, hot. You may notice flakes or strings
on the strip cup screen,if you are milking you may even
see blood in the milk. With Acute Mastitis, Your ewe
may seem reluctant to walk, or may even hold one rear
foot up as if she's lame and will not let her lamb nurse.
In the cronic form of Mastitis may not have a visible
effect on the ewe other then a "spoiled" bag.
(or the loss of that udder)
TREATMENT- If you suspect mastitis call your vet
immediately. This will need to be treated with
intrammary infusions of antibiotics and injectible
systemic antibiotics.  Apply hot packs twice a day to
udder and massage with
Pepperment Oil.. This will
help with circulation. If you can milk out this udder it
will need to be done at least 3 times a day. Catch this
contaminated milk if you can and dispose of it away
from your flock because it will be full of bacteria.
There are many antibiotics on the market for this
also. You may have seen these medications in your farm
store or catalog. "
Today" is an antibiotic in a tube used
for
lactating cows and they have one that is called
"Tomorrow" This is used for mastitis treatment during
the dry period. You should consult your vet as what to
use but they are safe for sheep.  These tubes are also
great to keep on hand for any kind of cut or topicle
infection because it is  an antibiotic.
Prevention- The best prevention is CLEANLINESS,
Always offer a clean dry place for your sheep to lay
with fresh clean straw for bedding.
After I clean my lambing jugs I always splash a little
bleach water around and let dry thoroughly before I add
new straw.  Enviromental sanitation and stress are
thought to be likely causes of mastitis.
Stress to the udder can result from ewes lying on frozen
ground which may cause frostbite of the teats. Nursing
lambs may transmit contagious (soremouth) to teats and
udders of their dams, causing secondary mastitis in the
ewe. Weaning lambs from ewes whose milk has not
declined sufficiently also causes stress to the udder
which may result in mastitis after weaning.
Taken every morning is said to
ease and even eliminate pains in
joints.
